Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!  

Just a quick reminder that although the 2017 Pantone Quilt Challenge is closed to new entries, there's still time to vote.  And voting is open to anyone and everyone!  So even if you didn't enter the challenge yourself, you can still participate in the vote :)
  

 

Cast your votes on the entries page here or over at Bryan House Quilts.  Voting will stay open until 10pm PST on Friday, June 2nd.  You get to vote for your favorite in each category.  To vote, simply click on the heart in the corner of the thumbnail photo.  Just don't go clicking willy nilly... you only get one vote per category (no redo's!) so once that little heart turns red, there's no going back.  ;)

2017 pantone quilt challenge – open for entries!

The 2017 Pantone Quilt Challenge: Greenery contest is open for entries!  You can link up here or at Bryan House Quilts.  (The linky runs on both blogs, so it doesn't matter where you link up—your entry will appear both places once you do!)

THE JUDGES

We are delighted to have these three judges on board:  Carolyn Friedlander (top), Jennifer Sampou (left), and Christa Watson (right).  These women are such an inspiration on so many different levels, and we have full confidence they'll do a wonderful job considering your entries.

THE RULES:

We’ll be keeping an eye on entries and enforcing the rules by removing any entries that don’t meet the requirements.  (But see below for more information on the separate linky for quilts that don't meet the requirements!)  

All items must be finished in 2017 to be eligible.

1. First of all, the feature color!  Here’s the official Greenery swatch:

The fabric in your quilt doesn’t have to be a perfect match to Greenery.  However, seeing as this is the Greenery pantone challenge, your project must contain at least some Greenery or similar green. (Just try to get as close as you can!) You can also use any other colors or neutrals you like, and as many (and as much) as you like.  That said, we would like to see Greenery as the feature color of your quilt, and we will be asking the judges to take your use of Greenery into account when making their decisions.

2. There will be three categories: quilts, minis, and just the top.

• Quilts: Any size from baby to bed (shortest side must be at least 30'').
• Minis: Shortest side under 30". (Pillows, table runners, place mats, mug rugs, etc. all count as minis!)
• Just the Top: Any size from baby to bed (shortest side must be at least 30'').

3. The contest will run from March 14 until May 29, 2017, with the link party open during the last ten days (May 19 - May 29, 2017).

4. You can submit one entry per category (i.e., up to three entries).  Entries for quilts and minis should be completed projects, including quilting and binding.  Again, all items must have been finished in 2017 to be eligible.

5. By entering the contest, you agree that your project picture may be used in follow up posts about the Pantone Challenge.

Today is the day! 2017 Pantone Quilt Challenge: Greenery contest details!

 

Rebecca of Bryan House Quilts and I are so thrilled Anne and Adrianne entrusted us with the hefty (and, let’s be real, super exciting) responsibility of co-hosting the 2017 Pantone Quilt Challenge. We’re both huge fans of color, this community, and of course, a little friendly competition :)  To that end, we’ve got some inspiring posts lined up, a tremendous trifecta of guest judges, not to mention some incredible prizes up for grabs thanks to our wonderful sponsors.  

So let’s get straight to it: judges, rules, prizes, everything you want to know…  

THE JUDGES

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We would love to see your creations while you’re working on them, so be sure to tag them on Instagram using the hashtags #pantonequilt and #pantonequilt2017.  And if your stash is a little light on Greenery, word on the street from the color guru (Anne of Play Crafts) is that Kona Kiwi and Fern are a great starting point (not to mention all those lush, pre-picked Kona palettes like Spring Meadow, Wondrous Woods, Pleasant Pastures, and Grasslands).

swanzzz {good night // hello, ollie!}

The moment I saw the sleepy tones in Bonnie's new organic line (Hello, Ollie), I knew exactly what to make.  (And, judging by the last stop of the tour, it turns out I wasn't exactly alone!)

You see, around the time Bonnie first asked us to participate, I'd been exploring a snoozy #yawnquilt theme, which made its way into this pillow for my zzz-inspiring friend, Alison:

And of course, those sleepy swans in her line had just the perfect potential to become ZZZ's all their own.

And with that, a bevy of swanzzz was born.

Of course ever since making this little naptime quilt I've been dreaming up another muted version of this design...

I've had to set it aside for various reasons, and likewise have been a bit delayed getting the paper piecing pattern released (apologies to those who've asked!) But let's just say that by the time the swans migrate (...south, and then back north again, that is), I'll be posting the pattern with a few layout options (think bevy // swimming in a line) to my little shop.  (For those who are patient enough to stick around, anyway!)

ode to the trees {paper obsessed giveaway}

It's my stop on the Paper Obsessed blog tour, and I figured I'd share a little something old and new.  Or, more specifically, something Ode.  You see, when Heather first told me last year about her new line about all things paper, my mind immediately went to the trees... those luscious, leafy green givers of fresh air, shade, the seasons, and of course, paper.

The design started off as a play on a row quilt, with trees both small and tall.  You know, because it is "Ode to the Trees" after all.  But I couldn't help but add in a few doodle blocks, like this one, which I call "scratch":

Then, as I was thinking about today's tour, I decided to test out another hack.  I have to say, no offense to the trees, but "scratch" has quickly become one of my favorite blocks from this design.  It's got such potential for movement, and Heather's line has the perfect range of grays to do the trick (with spot-on pops of color in that black print, I have to say!):

I enlarged the original pattern by 190% (similar to what I did with the trees, but even bigger :: hop on over here for instructions on how to enlarge paper piecing designs using a simple print feature!).

And because I can't make just one, I have big plans to turn this newly enlarged 9.5" x ~23" block into this...

At 190%, this particular layout would finish around 45" x 60".

Because paper's for doodles and chicken scratch too, right?

summer bling bag {SMS|RK manchester metallics challenge}

....Ohhhhhhh metallics.  If I have a weak spot for anything, it's that little bit of glitzy glam you can only get from a good gold.  Add to that some earthy browns, and I'm in my element, one hundred percent.

Cue Manchester Metallics, a new range from Robert Kaufman fabrics.  So when RK and Sew Mama Sew paired up for a summer bag challenge, I opted for a couple of the golden hues (eggshell up top, bronze on the bottom) to whip up an easy two-toned beach bag...

Plus two Kona charm packs (neutral and brights), you know, for a little extra bling.

I used a half-yard cut of the light metallic for the top, and a fat quarter of the dark for the base.  I just winged it, but I'm happy to sketch out a little tutorial if anyone is interested!

For the gemstones, I used my temporarily-retired-but-soon-to-be-rereleased (here) "Shinebright Birthstone" quilt block pattern to make 9" gemstones (a "sandstone" and an "ocean stone," no doubt).
